THE MAGICK OF COLOR · LESSON 5
Using Color in Practice
The quickest way to use color in magick is to add it to something you are already doing. Color can be added at any point in a ritual or spell to strengthen the symbolism. Here are three simple places to start. (Candle colors are in Candle Magick.)
Altar cloth and flowers
An altar cloth sets the mood of the whole space. Choose a color for what you want the altar to hold: green for growth, blue for calm, white for a fresh start, black for protection and rest. Flowers add color and life. Pick flowers in the color you want, or a mix of colors that matches your intention. Change the cloth with the season, the moon, or your need. See Altar Werk.
If you have pets, check that your flowers and plants are safe before bringing them in. Some are harmful to cats, dogs, and small children.
Papers, inks, and labels
Written work can carry color too. Write an intention on paper in a color that fits it. Use ink in a matching color if you like. Labels and containers for homemade items such as teas, oils, or sachets can follow the same idea: a green label for a prosperity blend, a blue one for a calming blend. Color helps you remember what each is for.
Fabric for charms
A small sachet, charm bag, or dream pillow can be made in a color that matches its purpose. A blue bag for sleep, a gold bag for confidence, a green bag for luck. Keep charms made with small items out of reach of young children and pets, since small parts can be choking hazards.
Let your feeling lead
The lists in this school are a place to start. If a color feels right for a purpose, use it, even if it is not on the list (Lesson 1).
Try this now: dress your altar in one color
Choose one color and dress your altar or a small shelf in it for a week: a cloth, a flower or two, and a few items in that color. Each day, notice how the space feels and how you feel near it. At the end of the week, write down what you noticed and what you would change.
Journal prompts
Take your time. Write as much or as little as you like.
- Which color did you choose for your altar, and what did it hold for you?
- What did the space feel like at the start of the week, and at the end?
- Where could color appear in your papers, labels, or charms?
- What would you change next time?
- Where could you add color to something you already do, such as tea, a candle, or a journal?
