THE ART OF PROTECTION · LESSON 1
Principles of Protection
Start with how it feels to be clean and clear.
Think of the last time you tidied a room, took a long shower, or opened every window on a spring day. The space felt lighter and so did you. Magick has a word for that feeling: spiritual hygiene.
Spiritual hygiene
Spiritual hygiene is the habit of keeping yourself and your space clear, the way you keep your body and home clean. Practitioners cleanse regularly so that they begin their work fresh, without the weight of a bad day, an argument, or a crowded room. It is taught here as tradition and personal practice, a way to reset your attention and intention. It is not medicine or a cure for anything.
The benefits people describe:
- You begin a ritual or spell with a clear mind
- You notice sooner when something feels off
- You build a steady routine that makes magick feel easier
- You feel calmer and more settled in your home and in yourself
Cleansing comes first
Cleansing and protection go hand in hand. Cleansing clears away what you do not want. Protection keeps your clear space clear. If you protect a space you have not cleansed, you may shut in the very thing you wanted gone. So the order is: cleanse first, then protect. Cleansing has its own pillar, Bell & Broom, where you will find baths, egg cleanses, spiritual cologne, floor washes, laundry, besoms, and more. Do your cleansing there before you build protection here.
Why protection makes us stronger magicians
Protection is not about fear. It is about confidence. A practitioner who knows how to guard themselves and their space can do deeper work with a steady mind. Think of a home with a good lock: you can relax in it. A few reasons protection builds your strength:
- You work from calm instead of worry
- You build boundaries, and boundaries are a skill
- You learn to notice and respond, which sharpens your intuition
- You can take on harder work because you have a firm base
Protect and defend
They are related but not the same.
- Protecting is steady and ongoing. It is the lock on the door, the daily habit, the ward you keep up. You do it before anything goes wrong
- Defending is a response. It is what you do when something feels wrong: a tense situation, an unwelcome influence, a space that feels unsettled. Defense often means banishing, cleansing, and strengthening your protection again
Most of the time you will protect. Sometimes you will defend. Both are covered in this pillar.
If it ever feels frightening
Protection magick should leave you feeling steadier. If any practice leaves you scared, overwhelmed, or unable to stop thinking about it, stop, ground yourself, and talk to a trusted person or a professional. Magick is never a substitute for real safety. If you are in danger, call your local emergency number.
Try this now: choose your first cleansing
Pick one simple way to cleanse that you can do this week with things you already have, such as opening the windows and sweeping, or washing your altar cloth with an intention. (Bell & Broom has many more.) Choose a day for it. Before you start, write down how you feel. After, write down how you feel again. Keep the note for the next lessons.
Journal prompts
Take your time. Write as much or as little as you like.
- When do you feel most clear and settled? What is usually happening around you?
- What tends to leave you feeling weighed down, and how could you clear it?
- What does feeling protected mean to you, in your body and in your day?
- Where in your life do you mostly protect, and where do you mostly defend?
- What is one small cleansing habit you could keep this month?
